Out of all the examples, I would be most comfortable as an audience member at the symphony orchestra concert. The musicians were playing Beethoven’s fifth symphony. As a violin player for nine years, I have been exposed to many pieces by famous composers. I have indeed played Beethoven’s fifth, and I have performed it with my class in front of our family members. Since I have experience with this piece, it would be more relatable for me to listen. Also it is interesting watching more experienced performers playing it, with a different conductor since he acts a beat earlier than the musicians. For the performers, I would expect them all to be seated, and all of the groups of instruments depending on each other. Some conductors cut pieces of music out, but I would expect this to be fully played. As for the audience, I would also expect them to be seated, and listening carefully to the different sections of the piece. And as predicted, when the piece was done the audience members applauded and some even gave a standing ovation to show appreciation for the performance.
On the other hand, I would be least comfortable at the jazz club. This specific one was performed in the 1950’s at a New Orleans bar. I personally dislike the sound of jazz, so as an audience member I would not enjoy it as much as I would enjoy the symphony orchestra. I also like string instruments more, so it would just depend on the audience member’s taste. There were only about five musicians, so it was not as busy as the orchestra. For the performers, since it is an up beat music style, some clapping or walking around would be expected for engaging the audience. As for the audience, I would expect them to be standing up in conversations, and dancing around with a family member or spouse. This was played in a more open area compared to the music hall, so the audience members have more of an ability to move around regardless of the smaller space. This makes sense, since I usually see jazz players at the train station where people are busy and rushing.

The performance where I would feel most comfortable would be the Jazz Club. The Jazz Club seems to be a very chill performance. The performers are singing and playing their instruments. But, it does not seem so official as they are taking pauses and don’t seem to demand silence. The audience is not sitting completely quietly. I saw even a waiter walking around serving drinks. People also seemed very happy throughout the performance, chatting with others.. It seems like it was the type of performance where people can hang out with friends or family, chatting and eating, while enjoying the Jazz music. If someone had to sneeze or get up for whatever reason, it would be acceptable and normal. It is most comfortable because everyone can do what they please without feeling pressured or feeling like they may disrupt the performance.
The performance where I would feel least comfortable would be the Chamber Music Recital. They are performing a string quartet known as “Joke”. The Chamber Music Recital seems to be very official. There are only four performers and it seems like a small hall. In this type of performance, it would be very disruptive for someone to speak or even get up. I would be nervous to even cough or sneeze because the room is silent. The audience is sitting silently throughout the performance. In addition, their seats are very close to the performers. There is only applause at the very end. During this performance, it would be least comfortable because the whole time people may be feeling pressured to hold in a sneeze or not use the restroom if needed.

I think I would be most comfortable in the Jazz Club. The whole vibe of the place seems very laid back and chill, there are people talking and just hanging out, I feel like it would be a great place to just relax and get your mind off of things. People are drinking, chilling. I feel like I would fit right in, I could dance and not be judged. As a member of the audience, it seems like we’re all supposed to be laid back and chill, this environment isn’t the extremely quiet and concentrated environment like the orchestra.
The one place I dont think I would be comfortable in is the Symphony orchestra concert. I personally can’t sit down in one place for too long and I feel like if I got up during the performance, it would be extremely disrespectful and everyone would look at me as in disrupting the performance. Although I do enjoy listening to classical music and symphonies and all of them, I just feel like actually being at one of the concert halls wouldn’t be the greatest.

After watching each performance, I feel like I would be most comfortable at a symphony orchestra. The reason being that I’m familiar with the environment so I know what to do once I get there. It is very calm when you’re there, as everyone is quiet and seated just listening to the music that is being played. As a listener, I’m expected to sit quietly, not disrupt the audience, applaud when they finish, and leave when the performance is over. If I were to watch an orchestra through the a screen I wouldn’t be able to hear the sounds as clearly and experience the beauty of the music. Although we have to be quiet during the performance, it’s so mesmerizing that you just forget about everything
I’m fine with attending a jazz club as well because it seems very chill and laid back. I feel like I could just dance around and have no one else judge my actions. The place I would feel the least comfortable at would most likely be the chamber music recital because when watching the performance, I noticed that the audience is very close to the performers and that would make me uncomfortable. Unlike the jazz club where we are also close to them, it seems more formal so if I were to make a noise or go to the bathroom I feel like I would disrupt them and ruin the whole performance. Overall I really wouldn’t mind any of them in the end because music is music anyways.

After listening to the performances, the jazz club would be the most comfortable environment for me. It seems the most chill and laid back compared to the other performances. I think in this performance it would be a really fun environment to be in. As an audience member, I would expect to be able to have conversations while the performance was going on. I think the performers would be smiling a lot and just very positive. It’s a place I could see people going with friends.
The least comfortable performance would be the chamber music recital. This atmosphere seems very serious and structured. I think it would be an environment that I would have to be very serious. Whereas, the jazz club seems playful. I would expect everyone there to be silent, as the performance is going on. The performers themselves would probably also be very serious and professional. This reminds me of middle school when I went on a trip to listen to a live orchestra performance. I remember everyone having to be very quiet. We even had to dress in formal wear and be very well behaved. These performances are very similar in the environment and sound.

Personally for myself, I would be most comfortable as an audience member for the symphony orchestra sitting farther away from the performers. A few months ago during the winter break I had taken the opportunity to go to a NYPhilharmonics concert of Brahms and Strauss, and my expectations were fulfilled. I was comfortable there because I knew what to do as an audience member, to keep quiet during the performance so as not to distract anyone’s attention, clap when they finish, and not to move around or speak unless it’s time to leave. I expected to hear a full concert of roughly 2 hours, and it was much better in person compared to listening to a concert from a screen. The sound is much fuller, rich, and the interaction of the conductor and the performers is vivid, rather than sudden closeups from a camera from a video.
I would be least comfortable at a chamber orchestra recital, because the distance from the performers and the audience is a bit out of my comfort zone. I would be more afraid to make a noise, and any movement could make a fellow audience member make a fuss, which in turn, could cause a domino effect that would reach the performers and their music would be disrupted just as fast. It would be nerve racking just to sit that close, and I feel if I had to attend a recital, it would have to be someplace that’s further away from the performers themselves, so they can concentrate on their craft.

The type of performance that I would be the most comfortable watching as an audience member is a jazz club because the environment is loud and hectic. I am the type of person who finds it difficult to fit in with others unless I get comfortable. I feel like from the four choices given, this is the only place where I won’t stand out or get that much attention from. At a jazz club, I would expect to hear a lot of different instruments and see people interacting a lot through the music. As a listener, I would be expected to be able to listen to the people and those playing the instruments in a casual manner rather than just quietly listening.
The type of performance that I would be the least comfortable watching as an audience member is the chamber music recital because the environment is so closed and widely focused on the people in front playing the instruments. Since it is a calmer environment compared to the others, I do not think that I can fit in because it would be awkward for me and I would stand out too much if I did something wrong. At a chamber music recital, I would expect to hear nothing but the people playing instruments. As a listener, I would be expected to quietly listen to the music that the people upfront are playing.
I have seen bands performing in school for high school and middle school concerts. I can relate this to the chamber music recital because the performance would take place in an auditorium, the space would be closed. Also, the audience sitting would have their focus only on the students upfront playing their instruments. It would not be an environment where you could talk or move around. The audience would also be expected to politely listen to the students.

Watching each of the live performances, I would say I would be most comfortable watching the live Jazz performance. I enjoy how lively it seems from the video and wish I could actually experience what it sounds like in person. It actually bothers me that the audio quality is so poor because I feel I would really enjoy hearing the full quality of the performance. I think I would be most comfortable with the Jazz performance because that is the closest to the shows I see. Most of the concerts I attend are very upbeat and lively, so I feel I could mesh right in if I saw a Jazz performance. Although it is unlike what I am used to, I would not mind seeing a Chamber music recital. The music they were playing was pleasant to the ears and sounded beautiful. I feel shows like that could help me develop a deeper appreciation for music. Being able to sit there and just take in the pleasant sounds I’m hearing is something I want to at one point experience in a live show. I wouldn’t be uncomfortable seeing an Orchestra concert, I just would much prefer the other two options. Not that the Orchestra concert was bad to watch, it was just different than what I would find myself listening to. The music I listen to relates more to the sounds of Jazz and Chamber music than Orchestra, but after watching the video of the orchestra, I would not mind seeing a show. I guess I would be most uncomfortable seeing a Hindustani classical performance. I don’t mean that it would be uncomfortable for me to see that performance, but out of the four options, that would be at the bottom of my list. That is simply because I relate to it the least and find it the least enjoyable out of all the options we were given.
When watching all the performances, I get different vibes from a few of them. With the Jazz and the Hindustani, I believe those performances are more “laid back” in a sense, in comparison to the other performances. For the Orchestra and Chamber performances, they come off to be more structured and have a more serious experience in a way, I don’t know how to explain it. I feel that same thing with the experience of an audience member. The audience members in the Jazz and Hindustani shows could come off more laid back than the Orchestra and Chamber performances. The Jazz and Hindustani come off in a way where they could be more lively than the Orchestra and Chamber performances.

I feel like the environment of a Jazz club would be more comfortable for me, it’s chill, there are people talking, singing, dancing and watching the performance. If I walk out, it wouldn’t even be noticed. You definitely don’t want to look like a bum at a jazz club but dress well or casual. The audience is usually drinking, chatting, dancing and watching the performance so I would definitely feel okay in that environment. The only difference is that the people around d you aren’t totally focused on the performance so that leaves you open for chats and conversation.
The least comfortable for me would probably the Chamber orchestra concert because I feel like if I got up and left it would come off as disrespectful and disruptive. Usually, in a concert hall, you come in before the performance, grab a program, and take your seat. There’s no eating in a concert hall, you can’t record the show (or at least it isn’t respectful to), if you talk, cough or sneeze you will get looks. The performers have their set program list, dressed in the usual concert black and correct posture. I’ve been to several shows at Carnegie hall and I always feel like I’m walking on eggshells from when I’m choosing what outfit to wear up to the point I take my first step into the train station.
