  1. Two specific aspects of rhythm that stood out to me was the beat and the tempo throughout this performance. The beat (pulse) is very quick and the drums help us pay attention to the movement of the hands in creating the sound and banging. We see how the piece is organized in reference to time units. As to its tempo, it is very fast just like the beat. The speed is very upbeat and on to the next beat. The performers themselves help us see how quickly the beat and the tempo are occurring. Their dancing helps us also notice how quickly their bodies move to the sound of the music. Their dance moves seem to be very energetic. The beat helps us see how their hands are moving and how quickly they move their feet.

    • I agree that the beat and tempo was fast because I thought that too. The drum playing and the people moving around to match the speed was seen. I noticed the people moving their legs and arms at a fast pace to match the beat and the tempo of the performance.

  2. This notation is able to help figure out a way to put a song together. I believe that the first column represents the beats that come along when dancing or performing a specific song. The first column shows different types of notes which can relate to how to play the song or when to perform a specific action. The second column in the middle tells us which way and how far we would move our feet while the song is playing. This is a way of writing the steps in a few words on how to dance the specific dances and how to specifically move about this song. The third column I believe is to help explain the further movement to the footwork being done and how many times you perform the part of the dance and what direction we go. A strength within this system can be the first column because the beat of the particular song can help a person who is dancing feel out the music once the accompaniment begins. A weakness may be understanding how to put this notation into movement in terms of column two where you see a few words being used to describe how to move within the dance.

  3. Two aspects of rhythm that I heard in this performance were the beat and tempo. Beat is defined as the steady rhythmic pulse and tempo is defined as the speed at which a piece of music or part of it is played. The beats of the people playing the drums were very fast as well as the tempo of the performance. There are a couple of connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers. You can see the topless men with white short pants moving their arms and legs quickly to match the fast tempo and beat of the performance. You can also see one of those men waving the things in his arms around and around.

The first column is sharing something similar to what seems to be the notes to a musical piece. The strength of this is that it looks visually very similar to normal musical pieces which gives a sense of familiarity. The weakness is that the person looking at it won’t know which way to read it. The second column is telling the readers what kind of steps to take and what kind of foot movements to make. The strength of this is that it is short and to the point where everyone can easily understand how the foot should be moved. The weakness is that some might get confused on how wide or narrow the steps should be. The third column is explaining what the steps make, for example, the first line translates to “These four steps make a double on the left”. It is showing what steps represent what moves. The strength of this is that it can make the dance moves shorter. The weakness of this is that people might get confused memorizing the numbers like 4 steps = double left.

After watching the clip on mute, I would describe the movements to be fast and danced to an upbeat tempo. The sounds that I expected were the playing of drums and trumpets to represent the four people huddled in the back, jumping and hopping one foot at a time and the people in the white next to the group of people in brown. I think the soft, but sharp whistling of the flute can be expected when the person in the orange starts moving around like he is sneaking around. Overall, I expected loud and banging noises because everytime the performers jumped up and down, it looked strong and impactful.

    • Hi! I also chose tempo and beat for the two aspects of rhythm. I found it interesting ho fast the tempo was in the performance. I was especially surprised because the music did not start off so quickly. In addition, I also picked up on the person sneaking around. Its interesting that when we see someone sneaking around, the flute sound comes to mind 🙂

    • I like how you mentioned that the sharp whistling of the flute could be portrayed well when the dancer was sneaking around. I agree that it was an excepted sound. I also expected loud banging noise for the dance as well, and it was defiantly due to the impactful jumping that seemed to partake in most of the dance.

    • I agree with you, as the song progresses you could see the performers playing quicker and dancing faster. I also wrote about their feet and arms moving to the beat and rhythm of the song.

    • i agree with you, you can tell that you know what you are talking about and the way you describe the tempo and beats really intrigued me and caught my attention. This shows you have a clear understanding of the aspects of rhythm that are being shown.

  4. 1. Part 1 – You could hear one of the instruments (I’m not sure of the name) it is like a maraca, that instrument is the meter, you can physically count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and with the instrument, so I’m assuming this is in 4/4. The sound of that instrument matched with the movement of the dancer, as well as the instrumentalists, feet. The tempo remained pretty consistent, but around the end you can tell the tempo was speeding up as the dancers moves became quicker and you can also tell because they start to shake their hips and move their feet at a quicker pace to match the speeding of the tempo.
    2. Part 2 – I’m assuming the notation in the first column are musical notes, and I’m guessing how it should be played. the second column is telling the foot placement for the dancer, for example, one of the directions say: “right foot approach”. The third column is further explanation on the step placement “these four steps make double vn on the left”. A strength is that it gives quite a bit on the direction of the foot and where to place it. A weakness being it is not very specific when it comes to the first column, Im not really sure what that is and it isn’t very legible, A key to read it would be helpful.
    3. Part 2 – The dancers seemed to be stomping harder on the first beat so I was expecting drums, maybe some string instruments. They seem to be jerking their heads and so on. I’d describe these movements as I expected more percussion than I heard. But, there were strong sounds and brass on the on beats, on one.

    • For part two, I definitely agree that a key being available for those who aren’t used to reading such a sheet would be incredibly useful for interpretation. Also, for the dancers, I didn’t actually think of string instruments at all while watching, so I thought that was an interesting thought and quite possible.

    • Hi! I also agree with your ideas about part 2. I also realized that the translation gives information about how the feet should move and which direction. You made a good point about the writing in the first column that being legible that did cause me to struggle a bit as well.

    • I liked how you predicted the instruments that the performers were dancing to. I agreed with you that drums will be one of the main instruments due to how fast they were jerking there heads during the performance.

  5. 1) Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm (beat, measure, meter, tempo) in this performance. Connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
One aspect of rhythm I hear is the measure, during certain portions you hear stronger and then weaker beats. There is also a steady beat that is played throughout the whole dance, one that stands constant throughout. The tempo also increased towards the end to a much faster pace. The movements of the dancer match the rhythm and they are stepping to the specific beats, going along with the music, as well as dancing faster when the music tempo increases.
2)Describe what information the author is giving you.
the first column shows the musical notes, the second column shows how to move your feet to the dance, the third column is explaining what steps to make for the dancers, such as “step to the right, left foot approaches,” and shows what represents the certain moves that need to be taken. One strength is that this system explains exactly what you need to do and the steps to do it. It is concise with it’s different columns, and the dancer can always refer back to it. One weakness is that it can be a bit hard to read and confusing. I think also the last column explains some moves in a complicated manner.
3)After watching clip on mute, what words would you use to describes these movements?
I would say that this dance seems to be a face pace, high energy, intense, and loud dance. It seems like the dancers are telling a story through their movements. There is a lot of jumping and stomping and running around as well. However, there are some incriminates that seem to be at a slower tempo. The sounds I expected was a lot of loud banging, drums, fast tempo and I thought it would all be played out in a low pitch as well with deep sound, especially when the dancers jumped.

    • I agree that when watching the clip on mute it seems that there would be intense and loud music. I like how you said the dancers are telling a story through their movements and I understand why you would say that. I did not think about that when watching the clip the first time but I do agree.

    • I agree with you. The ballet without the music seemed very chaotic and full of energy. It did seem like they were telling a story, however to me it didn’t seem like a happy one, but a sad, aggressive one.

  6. 1.Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm within this performance.(beat, measure, meter, and tempo)
At the beginning of the performance I heard a beat that was a quadruple meter. As the performance went on, there were additional beats but I think it was still a quadruple meter.
The performance began with not such a fast tempo but as the performance progressed, the tempo increased. By the end of the performance, the tempo is very quick.
2.Do you see any connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
Yes, the dancers’ movements follow the rhythm and beat of the drums and other instruments. When the tempo is slower, they are more still, just using their instruments and not dancing much, they are more moving around. But as the music gets faster, they start to move around a lot more and dance as they play their instruments.
3.Next to each section of the notation, describe what information the author is giving you.
The first column is the musical notation, the notes of the dance. The middle column is the steps to the dance. As I translated, it seems like a very simple, but repetitive dance. Left foot steps then right foot approaches then step to the right and left foot approaches. It seeks to be doing this pattern throughout the dance. The last column is the more complicated choreography. It is the exact directions as to what the men and women should be doing in each part of the dance.
4.Come up with a strength and weakness of this system
One strength to this system is that it is very organized. If one is concerned about which notes are being used, they know to refer to that section. This system is also helpful to the dancers when practicing or performing. If they forget the beat or what exactly they should do, they know which column to look at for each of their concerns/forgettings.
One weakness is the confusion between the last two columns. They are both discussing the choreography of the dance. The last column is supposedly the advanced and more complicated parts of the dance choreography while the middle column is just the dance steps. It may be hard for the dancers to refer to the middle section and last section in order to know what to do. It would be easier if it was one section explaining the dance steps and the exact choreography.
    5. After watching the clip on mute: what words would you describe these movements?
I would describe these movements as very quick with a fast tempo. The dancers are jumping and moving around very quickly. Tchaikovsky is a more slow dance while this seems very quick and more upbeat rather than soft.
    6. What kind of sounds do you expect?
I expect a fast type of music including drums and other instruments with distinct, harsher beats. Because of all the jumping, it seems like drums would be used. In addition, it seems like one dancer is running around so I think music like flute or trumpet would be used to resemble the running. Oftentimes, when there is running, there is a specific background “scurrying” type of music being played.

  7. pt 1
    1. Throughout the performance the two aspects of rhythm I can tell are beat and tempo, there’s the shaking of an instrument(the rattles) in the background, along with an almost hollow sound that is louder than the shaking, which is likely the talking drum, the flute, and the jingles that dancers are wearing on their feet. The tempo of the song is fast in the beginning, and they pick up speed, before flattening out to a slower rhythm that is reflected by the drum but not the flute and the rattles, which actually get faster in the background, creating a sort of dissonance between the instruments while still keeping a tune.
    2. A connection between the aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers might be that at first when they start out, they being with moving their heads to the beat of the solo hollow sound of the talking drum, rather than the rattles themselves. Some of the dancers are wearing jingles around their ankles, and I noticed that they step thrice to each side in small shallow steps as they go with the rhythm. When the beat gets slightly slower, they step twice, thus adjusting to the pace as they go.

    pt 2
    1. The strength of the system is that with both columns printed down the sides, it shows the notes of music that correlate with the descriptions of the choreography. As the first column shows the musical notes, the second(the middle), being the directional cues for where the dancers should move(left, right, etc), and the last being a few lines of instruction as to how the dancers should move about. A weakness might be the fact that it’s not necessarily clear as to where the descriptions end/start and if it had line numbers next to it, it might have been better organized and easier to read.

    pt 3
    1. Just by reading the description, I would expect some movements to be harsh, and strong, if it had sound perhaps it would have loud thumps on the ground from the girl and the other dancers. The movements in the clip are kind of erratic to me, a jerking sort of movement from the main dancer, and the others following her lead in a pattern. As it is about a dance to the death, I would also expect to hear deep dissonant sounds, not light hearted consonant sounds.

    • I like that you mentioned the head movements in the dance. I found it interesting that they didn’t just use their feet to dance.I also thought that the sound would be dissonant and just very harsh. I was surprised when I listened to the actual sound I expected it to be more intense.

  8. Lecture 4:
After watching the film on mute the different words I would use to describe these movements look very odd, angry-looking banging. It looks like they’re mad and showing that they are moving very quickly, they have lots of energy and it looks like what you would picture a ritual to look like. It sorta looks like they’re praising the gods that they believe in during this ritual. The sounds I would also aspect would be loud banging and thumping. It seems like there would be mainly harsh sounds that create a type of fast tempo.

  9. Part 1:
-The first aspect of rhythm that I noticed was the beat. The beat started off weak and then became a stronger beat as the song progressed. The second aspect I observed was tempo. Similar to the beat the tempo gets faster as the song continues.
    – There is a connection between the rhythm and the dancers. As the tempo becomes faster the dancers move a lot quicker. The same thing goes for the beat when the beat gets stronger the dancing becomes more intense.
    Part 2:
    – The first column is musical notes and the second seems like the placement for the dancers. There are instructions like left foot comes to right foot. The last column is more descriptive instructions on how to do the dance. A strength is that there are foot placements included to make the dance easier. A weakness is that timing isn’t included so it’s hard to say how long to hold these placements for.
    Part 3:
    – I would describe these movements as harsh and unified. Even though it seems chaotic the dancers are in-sync with one another. The movements also seem very distinct and not smooth. I would expect a strong beat or fast tempo that lines up with the dancing. The dancers seem like they are stomping to the beat of the song. So I would also expect a dissonant harmony.

    • Part 3: I also agree that the movements of the dancers were not smooth and I also expected a fast tempo. One point that I did not notice, is that the harmony would be dissonant and I agree with that.

  10. 1) Two aspects of rhythm within the performance and connections between the rhythm and the dancers
    – One aspect if rhythm that I hear throughout the music would be the beat. The beat is something that I hear right away. Some beats are a kit stronger and almost staccato like than other that may have a lighter tone to it. There is a common beat present which the dancers have a common tap to their feet to go along with the beat of the music. Another aspect of rhythm, would be tempo. As the dancers and the instrumentalist first came out the temoi began off rather slow and a few minutes in they began to speed up their tempo. Not only was the tempo sped up but the dancers began to dance quicker and move faster to match the music. So there is definitely connections between the aspects of rhythm and the movement of the falconers.
    2) What info is the author giving us, come up with a strength or weakness of this system
    – The first column seem to be musical notation or can possibly be the placement of the dancers themselves. The middle column when translated mainly give direction of which foot goes where. And finally the final/ third column translated to a more complex movement of the dancers patients.
    – A strength of this method would be that it is organized into three columns, which would make things such as learning a dance to be easier to manage and grasp the steps quicker. However, a weakness that would be is that there is no exact time of how long each step of or move should be done for. Meaning the steps are planned out for the dancers but there isn’t a time signature to go by.
    3) What words would you use to describe these movements? What kind of sounds do you expect?
    – There seems to be one main character in orange and other background individuals dressed in brown which began to jump together as they were in a circle formation. Throughout the dance there seems to be a lot of hopping/ jumping motions as well as a lot of hand raises. The kind of sound I exected would be a more dissonant and minor sound compared to the Tchaikovsky version. Because the dancers seemed to have less of an elegant look and the setting was a forest or mountain background.

    • For part two, I agree with the strengths and weaknesses you brought up. For the strengths, I see the notation is organized when it is separated into three columns. It helps the dancers have a more concrete set of directions on what to do. And for the weakness, I see how it may be confusing for the dancers. There is no sense of time stated for how long each move should be held for, and I thought that was a clever point!

    • For question 3, I really liked how you specifically pointed out which exact person you were talking about so it didn’t get me lost and confused. Also, I agree with you, but I really like how you observed into depth about the setting/location to compare it to the type of music it will be and how the sound would’ve been if it was unmuted. I also talked about the hopping because I thought that was a huge and important aspect to point out in this video because you can almost imagine or hear how the audio might be like.

  11. 1. Two aspects of rhythm
Two aspects of the rhythm of the performance is the different measures of beats as the songs progress. You could hear a change in beat tempo as it goes from slow to fast. Another aspect of rhythm is the measure of the drums. The measure of the drums changes as they play more and more as if they are creating momentum with the drums.
    2. Connection between the dancers
Yes, there is a definite connection between the dancers and the beats of the drum. When the beat seems to go quicker you could see their heads bopping to the beat and feet’s moving a little bit quicker than before.
    3. What information is the author giving you
In the first column I think it is the notes for the musical piece. Where the dancers would exactly start dancing. The second and third columns look like they are giving instructions to the dancer on where and how to dance during this musical piece. A strength to this type of musical information is that it is straight to the point and can help the dancer know when to start dancing. However a weakness might not be detailed enough to exactly know what beat to actually start dancing in because the notes don’t seem too in depth with that.
    4. After watching it on mute
Some words I would describe after watching these movements on mute are dramatic and harsh. Just from the beginning I could tell this piece was much rougher than the previous ballet piece we heard and listened to. I feel like this piece will have a lot of loud drums and dissonant sounds, because the characters look evil and scary.

  12. 1. One aspect of rhythm I hear within this performance is the beat. There is a steady, fast beat throughout. Another aspect of rhythm is the tempo. The tempo, like the beat is fast throughout the performance
    2. The connection I see with the dancers and the aspect of rhythm is the their hands and the beat of the song.
    3. The first column looks as though it is music notes, so it terms of dancers maybe that’s the note they start dancing on. The second and third column are basically telling the dancing how to move. The second refers more to the movement of the dancers feet while the third refers more to the steps the dancer will take when dancing. A strength can be that it has all the information a dancer needs to understand how they are dancing. A weakness is how much information is on the sheet and how it might be confusing to some people.
    4. I would use words like hard and heavy to describe this performance without sound. The movements are very harsh and it looks as though they are slamming their feet hardly on the ground each time they jump. I expect that the music would be very loud and thrilling, if they makes sense. Like the music would give you chills.

  13. 1) Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm in this performance.
Two aspects of rhythm I heard in this performance was beat and tempo. The men holding the rattles were shaking it at a constant paste. And the men who were playing the drums, were hitting the top fast making the tempo upbeat and easier to dance to.

    2) Do you see any connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
Yes, one connection I saw between the rhythm and the movements were the swaying and the head nods. The drummers would sway back and forth as they enjoyed listening to the music. And the rattle players would nod their head everytime they would shake the instrument as if the music was felt within them.

    3) Dance notation in the Renaissance Participation Activity:
-Column A=the steps the dancers have to follow
-Column B= instructs which foot to use
-Column C= informs what the steps serves for the dancers
A strength with this type of notation is that it is well detailed so the dancers have a stable idea on how they should perform. Whereas a weakness, is that people who are not that fluent in French may be confused as to what it is asking about the difference in columns. If a key were to be attached, that may help the dancers and it will help create a better performance.

    4) What words would you use to describe these movements? What kind of sounds do you expect?
Compared to the Tchaikovsky performance, the movements of these performers were less delicate and more harsh. The movements were not as smooth and soft. Due to the harshness, I would expect to hear the sounds of stomping feet, and yelling in the background. Maybe even monkey-like behavior since there was jumping that was occurring. Also the setting seemed to be more strange and creepy so there would be noises that would increase the level of discomfort of the viewers.

  14. 1) Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm in this performance.

And the rattle players would nod their head every time they would shake the instrument as if the music was felt within them.

-Column C= informs what the steps serves for the dancers
A strength with this type of notation is that it is well detailed so the dancers have a stable idea on how they should perform. Whereas a weakness, is that people who are not that fluent in French may be confused as to what it is asking about the difference in columns.

    • I agree with all the points you said. I liked how you mentioned that the rattle players would nod their head to the instrument as if the music was felt within them. And also for another weakness maybe you could’ve also added that they didn’t know when to change stances because there was no directions for that.

  15. 1. Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm in this performance
The two aspects of rhythm in this performance that I heard was both beat and tempo. I notice in the video that the tempo is played at a fast pace. The beat matches the tempo, as the tempo goes faster so does the beat. The dancers begin to move quicker and dance more as tempo/beat goes faster.

    2. Do you see any connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
The connection between the rhythm and the movements of the dancer is that, when watching the video I notice that as the drum beat begins to go faster, so does the shaking of the dancers. As the tempo increases so does the speed of the dancers to adjust their pace to the music.

    3. Next to each section of the notation, describe what information the author is giving you. Come up with a strength of this system and a weakness.
In the first column I notice the music notes on a line so I’m assuming that is the timing of when the dancer must dance. The second column is the directions or steps that each dancer must follow such as which foot to use. And the last column would be for more complex movements for the dancers. A strength in this system would be that the whole plan is laid out in front of them so the dancers will know what to do without making a mistake. A weakness would be that the timing. I don’t see the interval as to how long they must hold a stance or such.

    4. After watching the clip on mute: What words would you use to describe these movements? What kind of sounds do you expect?
The words I would use to describe these movements when comparing it to the Tchaikovsky performance would be that the movements were much more rough. The Tchaikovsky performance dancer was very light on her feet moving a lot, while with the Rite of Spring, those dancers I see stomping.I would expect to hear a lot of loud noises and it also seems that their chanting so I would hear a lot of yelling. I feel like I might even hear drums in the background since it seems like a ritual.

    • I agree on your answer to the question #4 because it can be compared because of the movements that were made to Tchaikovsky performance. I also liked how you wrote it seemed like they were chanting so there could be some yelled involved.

  16. 1. The two aspects of rhythm I’m able to hear are meter and tempo. The meter of the performance seems to be in quadruple meter, I say this because in the way they play the drums and maracas you can hear the four beats per measure. It is continuous throughout the performance and the people are dancing along. As for tempo, it changes only once towards the end, the beginning tempo although fast gets faster towards the end and it was apparent because of the drums. The dancers also changed the way they danced with the tempo change, speeding up matching the tempo.

    2. Column A: Notes or signal of when to dance
Column B: Which foot they are using to do the movement
Column C: Which steps make a certain movement
One strength of this system is that its specific for the whole play so no dancer would be lost but a disadvantage is that there are no visuals of the movement so each dancer can have a different interpretation which would make them disorganized.

    3. After watching the clip on mute I would describe the movements as abrupt and repetitive. The dancers constantly took small jumps intimidating the young girl and suddenly shited their head or arms randomly creating a scary and aggressive feeling. As for the sounds I expect fast strings with a lot of screeching noises as well as drums that match up with the jumping of the dancers.

  17. 1). I hear the beat by the use of the drums. Because there is alway a drum that is keeping the beat so everyone is on time. I hear the tempo by the drums on how fast they are playing and the speed the dancers were dancing at. If you follow the dancers feet then you can see the tempo.
2). The connection I see with the rhythm and movement is when the song is first starting off they are moving at a slower pace than at the middle or end of the song. Thus the dancers began to move faster as the rhythm began to move faster.
3).The information the author is giving me in the first column are the notes so it may be the notes that they are supposed to be dancing to. The second column is the feet placement or like the choreography. The third column could be the expression the dancer should have while dancing. The strength is that it is very organized because it gets straight to the point by how short it is. It is also split into three columns so you can zoom your focus into a specific place if you get confused or get lost. A weakness could be that it’s in a different language and the translation may not be as emotional as the writer intended.
4). I would describe the movement as sharp and energetic. The whole time the movements seemed fast paced and the changes were very quick. The dancers were jumping for most of the performance so it looked tiring and it took lots of energy to complete. The sound I would expect is intense and harsh sounds due to how quick the movements changed.

    • I agree with all of your answers. Initially, when watching the dance I didn’t focus of the tiring aspect that the individuals might of felt but after reading your answer to #4 it gives me another insight of how music effects dance and the individual that is dancing

  18. 1. Two aspects of rhythm I hear in this performance are beat and tempo. The tempo is fast paced. The tempo of the performance also correlates with the beat. As the tempo increases the beat increases along with it. Some connections I saw were that as the beat got faster the dancers also danced faster.
    2. Column 1- notes for dancers to know when they’re supposed to do their part.
Column 2- Instructions on which foot to use.
Column 3- a more descriptive instruction on how to dance to the music.
A strength of this system is that it gives clear instructions when and how to dance. A weakness of this system is that there is no clear instruction on when they should do it. Timing is an essential.
    3. I would describe the movement in the video as very active. The sounds that I expect are a lot of dissonant sounds. A reason being is that there are numerous people dancing closely together which would make the sound they all create louder.

  19. 1. I hear two aspects of rhythm in this performance which is beat and tempo. In the performance the rattle is producing a fast beat and quick tempo. As the beat gets faster the dancer dance faster. This is the connection between the rhythm and the movements of the dancer. You can also see the audience dancing to the beat as they are watching the performers.
    2. Column one shows the timing of when people are supposed to do come and do their part. Column two writes down how the people should dance to the music and which foot they should use. Column three is a description of how to do the dance. A strength of this system is that it is easy to follow. It shows you exactly what needs to be done at the correct timing. A weakness would be its lack of fluidity and practicality. As dance is expressive and not so “by the book” the columns are not the best way to teach a dance.
    3. I would describe the movements as jumpy and quick. I would imagine the music with a lot of staccatos and strong beat.

  20. 1. The two aspects that is present in this performance would be tempo and beat. In the performance, there is a fast tempo and quick beat. You can see the dancers movements are correlated with the fast beat that is being played on the drum and rattle. Even the audience members are dancing and correlating their movements with the beat that is being played.
    2. Column one tells the dancers when they are to do the movements. Column 2 tells the dancers which feet they should be using in the dance. Column 3 gives more description as to what movements they should be doing in the dance. The strength of this system would be that everything is spelled out and it’s easy for people to follow. The weakness of this system would be its lack of fluidity and practicality in dance which is supposed to be expressive and free flowing.
    3. The movements are very staccato, jumpy, and quick. Without listening to the music I would imagine it has a clear beat and many short notes. I would also imagine there are emphasized beats, some softer and some stronger.

  21. 1. two aspects of rhythm that stood out to me were beat and tempo. The music had a very fast tempo and the beat was also very quick. The beat in the performance corresponds to the drums being played. The dancers move their feet very quickly, matching the beat. Their dance helped see the beat and tempo a bit more since it was visualized. They were very energetic and move to the rhythm in a graceful yet commanding way.
    2. Column 1- shows the beats of the music to the dancers. It gives the dancer the idea of what to perform at a certain part of the song.
Column 2- shows what dance moves the dancers should perform and correspond it with column 1 to perform those moves at the corresponding beat.
Column 3-tells the dancer of how to move on the stage, meaning what direction they should move while performing the dance.
    3. Some words that I would use to describe are chaotic, tribal, ecstatic and something that I would see on the f train. I expected to hear drums and trumpets, which I think I heard. I expected something with a beat, and I heard it afterward.

  22. 1) Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm (beat, measure, meter, tempo) in this performance. Connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
An aspect of the Rhythm that I constantly heard is the measure. The beat goes stronger and then gets a bit weaker. And then also in the background there’s also a beat that is at the same pace and doesn’t change throughout the whole dance. This is the one that stands out the mouth. The temple increased two words at the end of the dance which turned it into a faster beat. The dancers’ movements were going accordingly to the beat.
2)Describe what information the author is giving you.
Systematically the First Column shows the musical notes of the dance and then the second column shows how the dancers move their feet in the dance, and the third column explains when to take what step and move. A strength in what the information that the author gives us, is that the system explains thoroughly and exactly what you would need to do for the dance. It is straight to the point and dances can always look back at it. A weakness that I would say that this is giving is that it is a bit hard to read and understand.
3)After watching clip on mute, what words would you use to describes these movements?
The dance shows that it is very energetic, intense and has fast beats to it which make it a fast-paced dance. A lot of the dancers are jumping a lot and running around a lot. But there are also some dancers that are a bit slower.

  23. 1.Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm within this performance. (beat, measure, meter, and tempo)
    – The two aspects of rhythm within this performance that I heard were beat and tempo. Tempo is how fast or slow a piece of music is performed, while rhythm is the placement of sounds in time, in a regular and repeated pattern. Tempo generally is measured as the number of beats per minute, where the beat is the basic measure of time in music. I would say that the beats started off very slow, but then it became more constant and more faster throughout the song and towards the middle where it started to get even faster. There was always a steady beat. As far as the tempo, it also increased and got much faster as the piece of music got performed, so there is a connection between the two which was as the beats got constant and more, the tempo also got faster.
2.Do you see any connections between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
    – Yes, there is a connection between the aspects of rhythm and the movement of the dancers. The dancers followed the beat and the rhythm. The things that they followed were the drums, flutes, and the combinations of the other instrument played. They all were getting faster and they started to dance a lot more faster. It didn’t seem like their dance was out of place in any of the parts. They were mostly moving their foot and waist according to the rhythm.
3.Next to each section of the notation, describe what information the author is giving you.
    – The first column is the musical notation, the notes of the dance or the musical piece that you would see them use to direct what and how it is being played. The middle column is the steps to the dance. Left foot steps then right foot approaches then step to the right and left foot approaches. Basically what kinds of foot movements are needed to take in the actual performance for the dance. The last column is the choreography and exactly what part is needed when. It is a more precise part for directions.
    4) Come up with a strength and weakness of this system
    – One strength is that this system explains exactly how to do the steps and is very precise.
    – One weakness is that it can be a bit hard to read and confusing. It is a little complicated. This way might be a little hard to memorize rather than having it watched.
    5. After watching the clip on mute: what words would you describe these movements?
    – I would describe these movements as very quick with a fast tempo and beat. The dancers are jumping and moving around at a very fast pace. Harsh, loud and upsetting. It also involves a lot of running around as well.
    6. What kind of sounds do you expect?
    – I expect to hear dissonant sounds that might sound very dark and harsh. It seems to be very strong in the way they dance. The dance seems intense and very fast.

  24. 1). The two aspect should of rhythm I hear is beat and tempo as both control the pace of the dancing. The connection I see to the dancers is the beat of the drum steadily goes faster and the tempo does as well then the dancers go along and dance faster and give more movement as well.
2).The first column could be the musical notes to where the dancer follows on the note they do a movement on. The second column is giving directions on what foot is to be used. The third column is how the rest of the movements more specific the dancer should do. A strength for this is it shows a detail and layer out plan on how to do and the steps for the dancers. A weakness could be that it might get confusing for some dancers because of the various notes given.
3). I would describe the movement as harsh and energetic because of all the stomping and jumping going on. I would expect to hear very loud sounds from different instruments due to the amount of movement in that scene.

    • I agree with your assessment of the ballet, especially compared to the earlier one, this is very energetic and spontaneous. It almost looks to go for the opposite of the elegant, smooth one showed earlier in the lecture.

  25. Music & Dance:
Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm within this performance? 2. Do you see any connection between these aspects of rhythm and the movement of the dancers?

    a. Two aspects of rhythm that are evident is the tempo and the beat. Tempo refers to how fast the piece is playing while beat refers to how many recurrent times It occurs within a certain time frame. When following along with the dancer’s movements (foot work, hip’s moving etc) it is clear that their bodies are being controlled by the rhythm of the music that they are listening to. The dancers are using their bodies to illustrate the emotions felt while listening to the music played.

    b. Column A: Gives dancers initiative (when to start/ stop)
Column B: Dictates the body’s movement to the song
Column C: Controls the direction of movement

    c. When watching the clip on mute there were a few thoughts that went through my head. Initially the movements seemed frantic and chaotic but after being taught how culture and music influences their dance moves I few it as energetic and emotional. They are using there ability to dance to tell a story through their interpretation of music

  26. 1. Describe how you hear two aspects of rhythm (beat, measure, meter, tempo) in this performance. Do you see any connection between these aspects of rhythm and the movements of the dancers?
    – In the dance “Baamaaya” I can hear how the tempo begins slow then becomes faster. Also, the beat of the drums are played in a steady rhythm.
    – The steady rhythm of the beat and tempo helps the dancers keep count as they perform. Even though the tempo is fast-paced the beat of the drums makes it easier to follow the rhythm of the dance.

    2. Try to write an explanation for a dancer or musician trying to use this notation. Come up with one strength and weakness.
    – Column A: Describes the musical notation of the performance; it helps the musicians create the melody for the dancers to follow along to.
    – Column B: States the different feet positions.
    – Column C: Describes the movement of the dancers feet positions in relation to the music.
    – Strength: The notation has to be simple and clear so that both the musicians and dancers can follow along.
    – Weakness: Since it’s so simple, performers wouldn’t be able to add any complex musical or dancing elements to the performance.

    3. After watching the clip on mute: What words would you use to describe these movements? What kind of sounds do you expect?
    – The dance moves in Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” was more disciplined and elegant. While in Stravinsky’s “The Augurs of Spring” the dancing was very fierce and energetic.
    – I imagine the music in Stravinsky’s ballet to have more dissonance and a faster tempo based on the dancers movements, as they were jumping up and down everywhere.

  27. I agree with how the notations in columns 2 and 3 seem to describe the different feet positions and how to move along to the music. I can see how column 1 could be used to tell when the dancers should start, but for me, I had interpreted column 1 as musical notation since it seems to reflect other musical notations we had saw in class.

  28. 1. In the dance performance, I noticed how the tempo changes over time, as the instruments used to shake become faster and faster meanwhile the drums help hold a steady beat. This affects the dance as the faster it sounds, the more energetic the dance is.
    2. The first column looks like a bunch of notes of some kind. The second column talks about what to do with the dancer’s feet. The last column can be about the dancer’s position on stage. The strength of this type of instructions are that any person with a basic understanding can pick it up and adhere to its instructions. A weakness is that the timing is hard to tel through this format.
3.When watching the clip on mute, the dance looks very jumpy and energetic. It also looks very spontaneous and hard to predict, due to the sudden, quick movements of the performers. The music I would expect to accompany this is very high tempo, and upbeat music.

    • Hi I agree with the fact that the dance was very energetic and the music accompanying the dance to be high tempo and upbeat. I also agree that the timing would be hard for the dancers to realize for the second question.

  29. 1) The 2 aspects that was the most obvious for me was the beat and the tempo. The beat and the tempo started off slow and increased throughout the music. The connection between the dancers and beat/tempo is the way that they are dancing. As first when the music is slower you could see less moving and they moved in a circle at a slower pace, The opposite could be said when the beat/tempo increased.
    2) The first column shows us the notes to the song that is being played, The second shows the dancers which foot should do what, and the third column is more descriptive directions for the dancers to keep up with the music. The strength is that it’s very easy to understand, you have the note and you have what you need to do during the note. The weakness is that there is no timing, the dancer could be confused about whether they should do that at the begining, during, or end of the note.
    3) When watching the video on mute, The dance seemd very lively and energetic. The dancers were running around and jumping all over the place so I would expect the music to be something that have a faster tempo and beat. The music should be on the louder and brighter side.
